Hello my crafty friends and thanks for stopping by! Today I am going to share with you my entry into this week’s color challenge over on the Just Us Girls challenge blog. It’s color challenge week and, as you can see, the colors for this week are brown, navy, and rust with neutrals being allowed too. This challenge definitely pushed me creatively, which I love! I’ve never even considered this type of color combination but I discovered it is great for male cards. I will try to link to as many products as I can.

Let’s start with the products I used. For the colors I wound up using my Distress Oxide inks in the colors Vintage Photo (brown), Faded Jeans (navy), and Rusty Hinge (rust). I then ‘smooshed’ them onto a non porous paper. I used a product that you use to make pie crusts. Then I sprayed each color down with my Distress Sprayer* from Tim Holtz. This is one of the handiest tools I have at my disposal, it makes projects like these a lot easier.
I then took my watercolor paper, which was Strathmore Watercolor paper*, and cut it down to A2 size (4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″). I like to cut my pieces down with the Fiskars Wire Trimmer*. I love this trimmer because there’s a wire where the blade goes and it shows you where the blad is going to cut. When I was little I could never use trimmers because I didn’t know how to line them up. Now I have both sizes! Then, after spraying the inky areas, I started with one piece (the left one) and started pouncing it into the ink. I bounced the paper from color to color, checking after each color, trying to get a ‘messy’ image that I liked. I then did the piece you see on the right. I did not add more ink to the mat which is what gave me more white space on that card.
Next, I picked the stamp sets where I would get the outside and inside sentiment from. For the outside I used the “Hooray” stamp from the Simon Says Stamp Top Dog Birthday stamp set and on the inside I used a “Happy Birthday” stamp from the Simon Says Stamp Birthday Messages stamp set. On the inside I stamped the sentiment using Versafine Onyx Black* ink. On the outside I stamped the sentiment in Versamark Embossing Ink* and then used Gina K. Designs Fine Detail Black embossing powder.
Me being me, I couldn’t just leave the card be and I wound up adding quite a few gems. On the left side of the card I used black strip gems I had gotten at a local craft store in Covina, Hearts n Crafts. Fabulous store, definitely check them out! I then took my Peacock Feather Gem Mix gems by Little Things from Lucy’s Cards. Lucy’s Cards and Studio Katia have my FAVORITE gems and sequins and pearls. I chose the feather mix because it’s a black/dark blue shift which I thought went nicely with the card challenge. To apply the Peacock gems I used my ever trusty Ranger Multi Medium Matte liquid glue*. I like lots of glues but this is the one I trust with gems and sequins and pearls the most. Here’s the final card:
